Anacortes has a special place in my heart. When I first moved to Seattle, it was a rough transition. I had spent 2 straight years traveling in community with some amazing people. I came to Seattle and felt incredibly locked-in. I didn’t know many people or have healthy relationships to help settle in. The Deception Pass area near Anacortes was a retreat of sorts for me. I would head up on a whim and spend hours walking the trails and finding solace in the vast wild.

I didn’t know it, but around the same time, my future wife was also using the parks around Anacortes as her retreat. She was a new single mother who was facing all kinds of challenges on her own. She would often drive up to Sharpe Park and sit on the cliffs, looking for whales and rejuvenating her spirit for the days to come.

Now that we are together, we still find ourselves drawn there, to get rest and fill up on the beauty of the Northwest, but also to share this almost spiritual place together.

The photo shoot with Hal Griffith for Seattle Magazine’s “Best of 2012″ issue was one of my favorites of the year. I did my homework, learned some Seattle history, and was able to get some great images for the magazine. When I met Hal, it made sense that he had spent the last 40+ years on fisherman’s pier. The Great Wheel has been a dream of his to build for a long time, and now it is a permanent part of the city’s waterfront.

Here is the photo that ran in the issue (my first choice as well).
I had the privilege of photographing Pamela Banks for Seattle Magazine. Pamela is the CEO of the Seattle chapter of the Urban League, whose mission is to see the disadvantaged of Seattle become self-sufficient.
When I first arrived at the Urban League’s temporary offices, Pamela took me around and showed me the operations. I could tell that she had real and determined passion for what she did. When the camera came out, her bubbly attitude and cheerfulness disappeared. It took a little bit of encouragement to get her to be herself when the camera was up.

LeRoy Johnson was Northwest University’s longest employed faculty member. He was hired 45 years ago to teach history and has seen three generations of students pass through the doors of the school. He recently retired from full-time, so the school wanted to honor him on the cover of the alumni and friends magazine. He was great to work with. I wanted to convey the sense of legacy in the portrait, and really felt that after a few frames, was able to do so.
